Abstract

Giorgio Toricelli Giorgio Toricelli (1800(?)–1843) born in the Swiss town of Lugano moves to Odessa around 1820. Developing rapidly, Odessa readily welcomed talented people from across Europe. The Swiss colony in Odessa was populous. Torichelli’s creation is closely connected with the personality of Province Governor General M.S. Vorontsov, who was appointed to this position in 1823. In 1909, Alexandre Benois published an article about the phenomenal significance of architects born in Swiss cantons, who had created and became famous in other countries. But, the list of architects from Switzerland, who devoted all their lives to work in Eastern Europe, would be incomplete without the name of Giorgio Toricelli. The most valuable sources, which help evaluate the contribution of the architect, are his projects kept in archives and museums. Since 2002 (after more than 76 years of absence), 79 sheets of architectural projects made by Giorgio Toricelli are kept in the Odessa Region State Archives. These sheets are dated from 1821 up to 1843. This collection of architectural drawings of designs made by Toricelli for Odessa for a period of over 20 years presents interest to investigators. 38 designs of the architect are kept in the palace-museum of Alupka, most of them being made in the 20s of the XIX century at the order of Count M.S. Vorontsov. The study of the creative heritage of this remarkable architect from Odessa convinces us that he carried out a number of projects under the influence of British architecture. Among them are such projects as St. John Chrysostom Church in Yalta (1832–1837), the Church Transfiguration of Lord in Moshny (1840), St. Zechariah and Elizabeth Church in Ak-Mecheta (the White Mosque), the English Club in Odessa (1842), Witte’s Palace in Odessa, the prison in Chisinau (1830–1840), and others.
